Trajan's Column

Facts

  1. The chamber is Trajan's tomb.
  2. There used to be a bronze eagle on the top of the column.
  3. It is estimated to weigh 1.100 tons

History

The presumed architect is Apollodorus of Damascus and was completed in AD 113. Built to honor Emperor Trajan, his ashes can be foind in the foundation of the column. Now tourists come to visit to lean about Roman history.

Importance

The inspiration for this monument was the war between the Romans and Dacians. The name came from the soldier-emperor who lead the greatest military expansion in Roman history. He was therefore known as "the best ruler."
